There are 2 official spoken languages in China, although both can be understood regardless of area.
Mandarin is the official state language of China and the most widely spoken Chinese dialect in the country. It is spoken in many of the largest cities in China, including Beijing and Shanghai. Mandarin is also spoken widely in Singapore and Taiwan.
Cantonese, however, is spoken largely in Hong Kong, as well as in Macau and the Guangdong province, including Guangzhou.
There are also 2 written varieties of the Chinese language:
Simplified Chinese which was developed in mainland China to make the characters faster to write and memorize. Simplified Chinese is standard in the mainland of China, Singapore and Malaysia
Traditional Chinese is retained in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities (except Singapore and Malaysia). The characters are more complicated as they contain more strokes than Simplified Chinese.
